Program Overview

Goal: To provide an intensive, fun, and supportive chamber music experience for amateur string players and pianists.

Dates: Wednesday evening, August 19, 2026 through Sunday lunch, August 23, 2026.

Participants: Open to intermediate and advanced adults and supervised high school students who read music. Pre-formed groups are welcome.

Daily Schedule: Participants will have two coached ensemble rehearsals daily, plus time for independent rehearsals, sight-reading, and brief mini-lessons and/or Q&A sessions with faculty. The retreat culminates in a final participant concert on Sunday morning, followed by a farewell lunch.

Evening Activities: Evenings are free to explore the cultural offerings of the Berkshires (Tanglewood, Barrington Stage, etc.). Alternative programs, such as a jazz session and fiddle music, are also being considered.

Location: Hosted at the Berkshire Music School facility, with the option for a final concert in the Taft building or at an off-site collaboration.

Participant Logistics & Financials

Total Cost: $750 — includes program, daily morning coffee/treats, lunch, and opening night dinner. Does not include lodging.

Registration Deadlines: May 1, 2026 — early bird special at $500. June 1, 2026 — regular deadline for registration.

Early bird special has been made possible by an anonymous donation.

Admissions Process: Participants must submit an online application, including a video recording (max 5 minutes, including a scale and a classical number). local applicants may opt for a 15-minute in-person meeting. The recording helps determine appropriate ensemble placement. A zoom option is also available.

Lodging Options: Participants arrange their own lodging at local hotels/inns or can opt to stay wit a local host family for a cost of $400 which includes a room and breakfast/dinner.

Transportation: Assistance with transportation from the Albany-Rensselaer Amtrak station can be arranged.

Funding: A $5,000 private donation (from a charitable fund) has been pledge to help defray participant cost and as well as offer early bird pricing.
